SMALL CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Post available in English and Romanian
Iata cateva idei pe care le-am pus in practica pentru anul acesta: Lots of people have a hard time choosing Christmas gifts. It’s very hard to make a good choice, but also, financially the month of December comes along with many unplanned expenses. Besides the more expensive gifts for my close ones (husband and parents) in our friends’ group, we do not put so much pressure on ourselves for Christmas. We try not to make our life hard, we budget and try to keep it as simple as possible. Budgeting is the key for a more relaxing Christmas. We usually gift something symbolic. Here are a few ideas we tried this year:

Stationery with a winter theme, or maybe a planner or a book you know for sure someone wants:

WINTER LANDSCAPE

Post available in English and Romanian
This is how winter looks from my window. Magical … until you have to go outside to work, shopping or for a simple walk. Then, you become an occasional climber on the snow mountains dumped by the snowplows on the sidewalk. The extreme cold wave is also contributing to this feeling. Until tomorrow when I start a new “expedition”, I choose to enjoy this picture.

THE CHRISTMAS FEELING

Peisajul de iarna, cu zapada peste tot, turturi la fereste si ghetusuri, nu s-a instalat in Romania in zilele dinaintea Craciunului. Totul insa arata ca in povesti si asta pentru ca parca autoritatile s-au straduit mai mult decat in alte ocazii sa deocoreze orasele. The perfect winter picture, with snow everywhere, icicles and glazed frost didn’t set in in Romania in the days before Christmas. Nevertheless, it all looks magical and that’s because the city authorities tried harder this time to decorate for winter. Here’s a detailed “postcard” from Bucharest and Iasi.

WINTER WONDERLAND

“The holidays are coming …” just like a famous commercial is announcing. Slowly, Romania is putting on holiday clothes. The Christmas lights were switched on in most cities on December 1st. I saw the decorations in Iasi and Bucharest. I’m already feeling the Christmas spirit, earlier than ever.

VIENNA, TAKE TWO

Vienna‘s main attraction, the Schonbrunn Palace was the first destination on our list. In the summer, the gardens transform the surroundings in a paradise, but the view was spectacular even during the winter. The famous “Schonbrunn yellow” made it seem like there’s no winter at all, just a warm spring. Also, here at Schonbrunn, you can visit the world‘s oldest public zoo.We never got to visit all the museums.  We had time to see Albertina, – the museum of classical graphic arts, and what a good choice that was! We remained captured by the arts and proceeded to Leopold Museum, for a round of modern art. For a change of theme, do not miss the Museum of natural history. It’’s worth visiting! We also toured Mozart’’s residence, took a walk by the Rathaus (city hall), and walked by the Austrian Parliament Building. While in Vienna, don’’t miss St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the gothic church that can be found in the center of the town. That concluded out fast – tour of the city.

IARNA PE ULITA / WINTER ON THE BYSTREET

Post available in English and Romanian
Asa arata peisajul de iarna in Bucuresti dupa o noapte intreaga in care zapada a cazut fara incetare. Apoi m-a lovit realitatea in fata … This was the view from my window after the snow storm that lasted all night long. I almost switched on to “kid mode” after looking at the winter wonderland outside and I remembered the sleigh rides from my childhood. Then, reality struck: This is Bucharest and the snow is not leaving anywhere … not before the Sun returns from his holiday. God forbid if the snow disappeared by other ways than the natural ones.
