PE UNDE MAI MANCAM IN BUCURESTI / WHERE DO WE EAT IN BUCHAREST

Post available in English and Romanian
In ultima vreme am facut mai multe vizite “La Ceaunu’ Crapat” (adresa: Bulevardul Dacia 19). I admit it! I like to eat good food and to discover new places and yummy recipes. There are so many options in Bucharest that I don’t often get to eat twice in the same spot. Still, there are exceptions from this rule. In the last months I’ve grown quite fond of “La Ceaunu’ Crapat” (address: Bulevardul Dacia 19).

Mi-a placut tot ce am incercat pana acum. In English that would translate as “The leaky cauldron”, just like in the “Harry Potter” series, but with no connection. It’s a place where you can eat great Romanian food and that is visited by locals ant tourist wanting to try the Romanian cuisine. The place isn’t decorated in Romanian style, but it’s warm and spacious. I need to add that the waiters are doing an extremely good job. They always smile and are willing to answer all the questions about the menu. This kind of treatment it’s the one that convinces me to come back again and again. I loved everything I’ve tried from the menu. “Carnea la garnita” is my favorite. Lean and very tasty pork meat, served with polenta. The dish goes perfectly with pickles.

Before this you can try “zacusca”. Of any kind: eggplant, beans or mushrooms. It’s so tasty, and it is  served with bread right out of the oven. The drinks are also good, besides the Romanian tuica (some kind of vodka with less alcohol) you should try “tainele padurii” – a Romanian liqueur from forest fruits, mint or green walnuts. You can try a bit of each to see what you like best. I’ve had them all because I can’t choose my favorite flavor. Don’t leave without having a dessert. I love sweets and I’ve already tried all that is on the menu here. I recommend papanasii (a kind of doughnut with jam and sour cream), green walnut pancakes and crème brulee.

A durat o ora. Comanda a venit in sfarsit …

I also want to thank them because, for my mother’s birthday all of our drinks were on the house. They’ve told us at the end and we couldn’t believe it. Some time ago they also had a very cute cat in the courtyard, unfortunately she disappeared but the place never lost his charm.

Also on Dacia Boulevard, a little bit closer to Piata Romana you can find “La Placinte” / “The Pie House” (address: Bulevardul Dacia 20). The first restaurant of this kind opened in Moldavia and I was happy to hear they also came here. The food is absolutely delicious, but I won’t be coming back again anytime soon and that’s because for me the service also counts. They always have a full house so that got me to come in, it means the food is tasty. I’ve decided to pay them a visit so I reserved a table. When we got there the restaurant was full. We’re used to being polite so we waited to be seated to our table. 2 minutes passed … 5 minutes … and nothing. We searched for a waiter to guide us. The first person that we’ve met, a nervous young lady said to wait for her “colleague”. Another 5 minutes passed, we were awkwardly standing in the restaurant, and the “colleague” never showed up. We seated ourselves, hoping that we’re at our table. Another 10 minutes passed by and nobody disturbed us, not even with the menus. After some time, the same girl gestured from the distance and confirmed that we are indeed at our table. After a while she came to tell us that the “colleague” will be right over. After another 10 minutes I started to believe that this “colleague” does not exist. He finally showed up with the menus. We were at least expecting an “we’re sorry  for the delay” but nope, nothing. Ok, I’ve started to browse through the menu. Everything really looks delicious. And I choose as a drink palinca (a strong Romanian alcoholic drink). I find out that they are out of it. I pick something else to drink and I order a soup. Another disappointment: they don’t have soup, even if in the menu they have 5 different kinds in the menu. Now, I wonder why they even have a menu if none of the foods exist. Finally I ordered a traditional pie, with potatoes and mushrooms and another kind of traditional food “invartita” with cheese. They didn’t bother to inform us that it will take a while … a whole hour passed and no sign of food. Our order finally came … mixed up. There was no “invartita”, just 2 pies, one with potatoes and mushrooms and another one with cheese. I’ve politely said to the waiter that we did not order a cheese pie, but an “invartita” with cheese, and he coldly replied with “they are the same”. I didn’t have time to respond with no, they are not the same, he was gone like the wind. We leave the mix up behind us and we try the food. Absolutely delicious. We also had a grilled chicken breast that night.

We also had a grilled chicken breast that night.

The dessert is our weakness so we tried a lot of  stuff. Papanasii are special – served in the form of little doughnuts filled with cheese and topped with sour cream and jam. Also, the pancakes with cheese and honey were amazing. But the best treats ever were the classic cheese cake, and the cheese cake topped with nuts and honey.

We drank tuica and the house red wine, very good choices. As a nonalcoholic drink try “compot cu fructe de padure” it’s like a cold tea made from forest fruits.

I hope they will sort out the personnel problems , because the customers are the most important from my point of view, since they are the ones paying. We would like to thank the chef because he saved a night that could have been a total disaster.
